Day 1
You take the day train from Bangkok to Phitsanulok. On the way you can see the Thai countryside and understand why they call this part the rice barn of Thailand, green rice fields as far as the horizon. On arrival in Phitsanulok we pick you up at the train station and transfer you to the La Paloma hotel. In the evening you can go to the river to enjoy a dinner on a raft or go to see the famous Flying Vegetables show at the night market.
Day 2
Your guide will come to pick you up at the hotel. First you go to see the Wat Mahathat, in this temple there is a very beautiful Buddha image, one of the most important in Thailand. You will see a lot of Thai people come top worship here.
Then on to Sukothai, the first capital of Thailand. Here we will rent bicycles and see the remains of the city, more than 700 years old. Then on the border town of Mae Sot where we visit the border market on the Moei river and a Burmese temple with a giant 45 meters reclining Buddha image.
Day 3
We visit the morning market in Mae Sot is very colorful, you will see a mix of Thai, Indian, Burmese and Hill tribe people selling local products. After that we drive north along the Burmese border. In this area there are a lot of refugee camps where the Karen people who escaped from Burma live. The roads conditions are very poor, however the breathtaking mountain scenery makes for an interesting journey. At the end of the day we arrive in Mae Sariang where we will spend the night.
Day 4
Today we drive towards Mae Hong Son province until we reach a Hmong village on the top of a mountain at 1.680 meters. From here we have a fantastic view of the valley below. Then towards Mae Hong Son where we will visit a few Burmese temples in the Shan style. Overnight in Mae Hong Son.
Day 5
In the morning we go to a village of the famous Padong Longneck people. Then we continue east and visit the beautiful Tham Lod cave in Soppong. We can go inside the cave by bamboo raft and see the stalagmites and stalagtites. Also we visit a Lisu and a Lahu hill tribe village, after that continue to the cozy backpacker town of Pai where we will spend the night
Day 6
We go to the elephant camp where we will see the elephants taking their morning bath and demonstrating some of their skills. Afterwards take an elephant ride for approx. 1 hrs to a Lisu hill tribe village. The ride takes you through some of the lovely forest scenery and along the river. You will come back to the elephant camp by oxcart. After lunch take a bamboo raft trip down the river, admire the scenery and absorb the tranquility as you float down the river. Then drive to Chiang Dao where we will spend the night at a nice resort near the Chiang Dao cave.
Day 7
We drive to Tha Ton where we will go to see a big Buddha statue on top of a mountain. Then we take a longtail boat which takes us in about 3 hours to Chiang Rai. Here we will stay in a hotel near the night bazaar.
Day 8
We continue to Doi Mae Salong, a Chinese village on top of a mountain. When Chairman Mao founded the Peoples Republic of China in 1949 the Kuomintang led by Chiang Kai Shek had to escape. Most people went to Taiwan but a small group escaped to Thailand. We visit the local market and we taste the famous Oolong tea. After that we go to Doi Tung to visit the Royal Project. The mother of the present king established a project for the hill tribe people who used to grow opium. Now they are stimulated to grow vegetables and flowers and you can see the beautiful Mae Fah Luang flower garden here. Also we visit the famous Doi Tung temple with a splendid view of the surrounding valley. We will spend the night in the most northern province of Thailand
Day 9
We drive to the Burmese border at Mae Sai and spend some time to explore this bustling market town. If you want you can cross to the Burmese town of Tachilek. We drive to the Golden Triangle and Chiang Saen on the banks of the Mekong River. See the point where the three countries of Burma, Laos & Thailand converge. After that we see the ancient temples of Chiang Saen. On the way back we stop at some hot springs.
